These recreational teams play in the spring and fall in a joint league with Fort Hunt Youth Athletic Association and Fort Belvoir Youth Sports.  Teams are newly formed every season at three levels of play: C-Ball (coach pitch), Junior Ball (10-12), and Senior Ball (13&up). Additionally, MVYAA-Softball participates in the Northern Virginia House All Star Tournament (10u, 12u, and 18u) at the end of the spring season (in mid-June). We typically field two teams at each age level, but we aspire to grow! We form house teams with team parity being paramount -- as such, teams are realigned each season and requests are entertained but cannot be guaranteed so that we can balance talent levels between teams as evenly as possible. We have many experienced house coaches but are always seeking more -- please consider volunteering.

Recreational Softball:

MVYAA Softball sponsors intramural or "house" programs in both spring and fall. In both seasons, we play in a combined league with Fort Hunt and Alexandria Potomac Softball. We also have all-star teams at various age groups participate in the June Northern Virginia all-star tournament and additional tournament play.

Spring is the primary season for fast pitch softball. Registration begins February 1 and practices typically begin in late March. Games typically begin in mid-April and run through the first week of June.

The fall season is typically shorter and is designed to be developmental. It is intended for girls who would like to continue playing softball in the fall rather than moving to another sport. Players who prefer to play only in the spring are welcome to do so.
  • Our C-Ball division is for 7-9 year olds. It is "coach pitch" and designed to be primarily instructional. There is no C-Ball division offered in the fall.
  • Our Junior division is for 10-12 year olds. It is "kid pitch" and features sliding, base-stealing, bunting, and other advanced skills.
  • Our Senior division is for 13-16 year olds (not playing high school varsity softball). This level features a high level of play and prepares girls well for high school competition.
After registration closes, the league Commissioners and Board members determine how many teams should be formed and recruit coaches for each team. Once coaches are selected, the Commissioners, in consultation with the coaches in each age division, meet to select or draft teams in a manner that seeks primarily to guarantee team parity.

MVYAA Softball seeks above all else to promote team parity, camaraderie, and sportsmanship. As such, we cannot guarantee any requests for a specific team, coach, or team mate. However, we do allow players to indicate any such preference on their registration forms, and if we can accommodate the request while still achieving our goals, we seek to do so. In the majority of cases requests are accommodated but this cannot always be accomplished.

Similarly, while requests to remain on the same team are considered, if reassignments are necessary to maintain team balance, we cannot guarantee a player will return to the same team. Moreover, we find that league sportsmanship is enhanced when players, parents, and coaches move around and get to know each other from season to season.
